Essential Information & FAQs
Best Time to Go for Gorilla Trekking:
Dry Seasons (June to August & December to February): Ideal for trekking. Trails are less muddy and slippery, making the hike somewhat easier. This is the most popular time.
Wet Seasons (March to May & September to November): Still a great time to go! The forest is lusher, photography is excellent with soft light, and it’s less crowded. Be prepared for rain and more challenging trail conditions.
Gorilla Trekking: What to Know
Fitness Level: A moderate to good level of fitness is required. The terrain is steep, muddy, and at high altitude.
Age Limit: You must be 15 years or older to participate in gorilla trekking.
What to Pack: Waterproof hiking boots, garden gloves, long-sleeved shirts, trousers, a daypack, rain jacket, a camera (no flash!), and a reusable water bottle.
Health: You will be required to maintain a distance of 7-8 meters from the gorillas. If you have a contagious illness like a cold, you will not be permitted to trek to protect the gorillas.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How hard is the trek? It varies daily. It can be a gentle 1-hour walk or a strenuous 4-hour hike. Your fitness and the location of the gorillas determine the difficulty.
Is seeing gorillas guaranteed? The success rate is over 98%. The trackers know the gorillas’ territory intimately. If you are unable to complete a very long or difficult trek, the park may offer a partial refund (at the park’s discretion), but this is very rare.
What if I can’t do the long trek? For an extra fee (subject to availability), you can request a “porter” who will assist you with your backpack and physically help you on the steep sections. This is highly recommended.
Why is the permit so expensive? The permit fee is crucial. It directly funds conservation efforts, anti-poaching patrols, veterinary care, and community development projects around the park, ensuring the gorillas are protected for generations to come.
