This demanding yet profoundly rewarding 10-day expedition is a dedicated trek to the summit of Margherita Peak (5,109m) in Uganda's Rwenzori Mountains. Following the classic Central Circuit Trail, this journey is a world-class mountaineering experience. You will traverse breathtaking and otherworldly landscapes, from lush tropical rainforests and dense bamboo zones to the surreal Afro-alpine moorland, famous for its giant lobelias and groundsels. The trek requires a good level of fitness and acclimatization, with the final summit push involving glacial travel. Day-by-Day Itinerary
Kampala to Kasese / Trek Preparation
Depart Kampala early for a scenic full-day drive to Kasese (~6-7 hours). Meet your guide for a comprehensive trek briefing and gear check. Overnight in Kasese.
Transfer to Trek Start / Trek to Sine Hut
Morning transfer to the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services (RMS) base at Mihunga (1,450m). Begin trekking through farmland and montane forest to Sine Hut (2,596m). (~5-7 hours trekking).
Sine Hut to Kalalama Camp
Ascend through the bamboo and heather zone to Kalalama Camp (3,134m). (~4-5 hours).
Kalalama Camp to Bugata Camp
Continue through the heather and moorland zone, crossing the Mutinda valley to Bugata Camp (4,100m). (~5-6 hours).
Acclimatization Day at Bugata Camp
A crucial day for acclimatization. Optional short hike to nearby viewpoints.
Bugata Camp to Hunwick’s Camp (via Bamwanjara Pass)
A challenging day crossing the Bamwanjara Pass (4,450m) and descending to Hunwick’s Camp (3,974m). (~6-8 hours).
Hunwick’s Camp to Margherita Camp
Trek to the base camp for the summit, Margherita Camp (4,485m), with spectacular views of the peaks. (~4-5 hours).
Summit Day: Margherita Camp to Margherita Peak & Descent to Kitandara
Very early start for the glacier traverse and technical climb to Margherita Peak (5,109m). Descend to Kitandara Camp (4,023m). A long, demanding day (~10-12 hours).
Kitandara to Guy Yeoman Hut
Descend via the Freshfield Pass to Guy Yeoman Hut (3,500m). (~5-6 hours).
Final Descent / Return to Kampala
Final descent through the rainforest to the roadhead. Receive your summit certificate, transfer to your vehicle, and begin the journey back to Kampala, arriving in the evening. (~5-6 hours trekking + ~6-7 hours drive).
